Description
Scientific Name: Odontesthes regia
Produced in the Pacific coastal area of Peru they range between 5 to 7 inches in length with approximately 12 to 16 fish per pound.
Larger Peruvian smelts (often marketed as “spearing”) are heavily used by anglers in the US for catching large game fish, such as fluke, striped bass, and pike.
Excellent for bottom fishing. Hook them through the lips or tail depending on the rig. Cut them into diagonal chunks or strips. The oily flesh creates a strong scent trail in the water. Bind 2-3 small smelt together with bait thread to mimic a small fleeing school.
